SCOLIOSIS

At the office of Boston Sports & Shoulder Center, we provide the care you need for scoliosis and many other conditions.

Scoliosis is a back condition that can be treated. While the causes of this condition are unknown, we do know that it typically affects more girls than boys, and usually develops right before puberty. With scoliosis, the spine curves instead of growing straight. Usually the curve is minor; however it can worsen over time. That’s why it’s very important to see your doctor and get it checked out. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most apparent signs of scoliosis typically include:

  • Uneven shoulders
  • One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
  • Uneven waist
  • One hip higher than the other

Because the curving of the back associated scoliosis can be minor and not associated with pain, it can be hard to detect. A pediatrician will typically check the spine for curvature as part of a regular, annual well visit. So that is a good way to detect it. Also, knowing the symptoms to look for can help you identify a problem. In addition, there are a few risk factors for the condition. These include, pre-pubescent age, female gender, a family history of scoliosis.

One way your doctor monitors the spine for signs of scoliosis is by having the child bend forward, with arms handing, so the doctor can look closely at the curve of the spine. If the physician detects scoliosis, he or she may request further tests such as x-rays to help reveal the severity of the curvature. With a scoliosis diagnosis, it’s important to continue to monitor the condition on a regular basis to assess any progression. Often, there is no need for treatment. However, if the condition gets worse, your doctor will discuss the treatment options.
